GFA to Honour Asamoah Gyan with Testimonial Match for His Legendary Career

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially announced plans to organise a grand testimonial match in honour of legendary Ghanaian striker and former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, to celebrate his illustrious football career and remarkable contribution to Ghanaian football.
According to a statement published on the GFA’s official website, the testimonial will serve as a tribute to Gyan’s outstanding service to the national team and his achievements on both the local and international stages. The event, the Association noted, will bring together former teammates, international football icons, and fans to celebrate the player who remains Ghana’s all-time top scorer.
“The Ghana Football Association will hold a testimonial match in honour of Asamoah Gyan for his dedication and immense contribution to Ghana football,” the statement read.
Asamoah Gyan, fondly known as “Baby Jet,” made his debut for the Black Stars in 2003 and went on to score 51 goals in 109 appearances, making him Ghana’s all-time leading goal scorer. He featured in three FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, and 2014), becoming Africa’s top World Cup scorer with six goals. Gyan also played a pivotal role in Ghana’s memorable 2010 World Cup campaign, where the Black Stars reached the quarterfinals, Africa’s best performance at the time.

Beyond his national team heroics, Gyan enjoyed an illustrious club career across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, playing for top sides including Udinese (Italy), Stade Rennais (France), Sunderland (England), Al Ain (UAE), and Shanghai SIPG (China).
The GFA stated that full details of the testimonial match, including the date, venue, and list of participating players, will be announced soon.
Football fans and industry watchers see the planned testimonial as a long-overdue recognition for one of Ghana’s greatest sporting icons, whose career inspired a generation of young footballers across Africa.
The celebration will also serve as a platform to honour Gyan’s off-field contributions, including his philanthropic work through the Asamoah Gyan Foundation, which supports education, sports, and community development projects in Ghana.
Gyan retired officially from professional football in June 2023, ending a two-decade career filled with historic goals, iconic celebrations, and global acclaim.
