63 NPP MPs Endorse Bawumia as Flagbearer, Citing Vision, Unity, and Proven Leadership

A group of sixty-three Members of Parliament (MPs) from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally declared their support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in his bid to become the party’s next flagbearer.

The declaration was made at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, October 23, 2025, where the MPs outlined their reasons for backing Dr. Bawumia, emphasising his leadership record, competence, and capacity to unify the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The announcement represents one of the largest public endorsements so far in the NPP’s ongoing internal race, which is expected to determine the party’s political direction in the post-Akufo-Addo era.

Speaking on behalf of the endorsing MPs, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, Member of Parliament for Mampong, described Dr. Bawumia as a “disciplined, visionary, and results-driven” leader whose record in public service speaks volumes.

He said the decision to support the former Vice President was based on conviction rather than sentiment. “Our choice reflects a deep belief in Dr. Bawumia’s vision for Ghana — one anchored in innovation, economic transformation, and inclusive leadership,” he stated.

According to Ampratwum-Sarpong, Dr. Bawumia embodies the next phase of the NPP’s evolution — a phase built on competence, digital growth, unity, and renewed optimism.

He added that the MPs’ collective decision reflects confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s capacity to build upon the NPP’s achievements while addressing Ghana’s emerging challenges in technology, infrastructure, and job creation.

The Mampong MP further noted that Dr. Bawumia’s leadership style has consistently demonstrated humility, teamwork, and a forward-looking mindset — qualities he described as essential for both party cohesion and national progress.

“Dr. Bawumia has shown that he can unite people across political and social divides. His ability to inspire trust among young people, business leaders, and faith communities makes him a bridge between the party and the wider electorate,” Ampratwum-Sarpong observed.

He also projected that under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership, the NPP could broaden its electoral base and strengthen its appeal in regions where it has traditionally struggled to gain traction.

The MP appealed to party delegates nationwide to support a leader who combines loyalty and humility with tangible achievements, stressing that the upcoming flagbearer selection was a defining moment for the NPP’s identity and future.

“We are confident that with Dr. Bawumia as our leader, the NPP will not only remain united but also deliver victory in 2028 and beyond,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia’s endorsement by the 63 MPs adds to his growing list of supporters within the NPP, including regional executives, constituency officers, and members of the party’s youth and women’s wings.

The NPP’s upcoming flagbearer contest is expected to be one of the most competitive since the party’s formation, with several prominent figures — including former ministers and long-time party stalwarts — positioning themselves for the top slot.

Political analysts say parliamentary endorsements could play a decisive role in shaping delegates’ preferences, given MPs’ influence in their respective constituencies.

According to Dr. Joseph Ayee, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, endorsements of this nature often help build momentum and credibility for a candidate, particularly in a party known for its strong grassroots network. “MPs can serve as political multipliers,” he explained. “Their public backing sends a signal of organisational strength and electability.”

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who served as Ghana’s Vice President from 2017 to 2025, is widely credited with spearheading the country’s digital transformation agenda. Initiatives such as the national digital property address system, mobile interoperability, and the Ghana Card integration were central to his economic modernisation drive.

Supporters argue that these reforms have improved efficiency in service delivery, boosted financial inclusion, and laid the foundation for a more transparent economy.

However, critics have questioned the sustainability of some of his policies amid Ghana’s current fiscal challenges. Despite these concerns, Dr. Bawumia remains one of the most recognisable figures in Ghanaian politics — seen by many as a bridge between the NPP’s traditional base and the emerging digital generation.

For Ghana and the wider African continent, his political rise highlights an ongoing shift toward technocratic leadership and data-driven governance, reflecting the growing importance of innovation in national development.

The NPP, which has ruled Ghana for 16 of the last 24 years, faces the dual challenge of maintaining internal unity while addressing economic recovery and voter fatigue. Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy is viewed as an opportunity to blend continuity with renewal — preserving the party’s achievements while appealing to a younger, more tech-oriented electorate.

If he secures the flagbearer position, Dr. Bawumia would become the first Northern Muslim leader of the NPP — a historic milestone that could further reshape Ghana’s political and cultural discourse.

Political observers believe this could strengthen the party’s image of inclusivity and national cohesion at a time when issues of regional balance remain relevant in Ghana’s multiparty democracy.

As the NPP’s internal race intensifies, the endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by 63 sitting MPs reinforces his position as a frontrunner and sets the tone for what could become one of Ghana’s most consequential political contests in recent history.

Whether this wave of support translates into victory at the party’s national delegates’ conference remains to be seen — but one thing is clear: the outcome will have lasting implications for both the NPP’s legacy and Ghana’s political future.
