Police Arrest Three in Sakumono Golf Club Shooting as Investigation Deepens

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of three suspects following a shooting incident at the Celebrity Golf Club in Sakumono, a suburb of Accra, on Saturday, October 18, 2025. Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the cause of the altercation and identify all individuals involved.
The Accra Regional Police Command, in a statement released on Sunday, October 19, announced that a special investigative team has been deployed to gather evidence and track down any remaining suspects linked to the shooting.
“The Accra Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into a shooting incident that occurred yesterday at the Celebrity Golf Club in Sakumono,” the statement said. “Three persons have so far been arrested in connection with the incident, while efforts are ongoing to arrest any other persons involved.”
The police have yet to disclose the names of the suspects or details regarding possible casualties, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The Celebrity Golf Club, located within the Tema West Municipality, is one of Ghana’s premier golf and recreation centers, frequented by both local professionals and expatriates. The upscale facility often hosts corporate events, tournaments, and social gatherings.
Incidents of violent crime at such establishments are uncommon, which has heightened public interest and concern. Security experts note that this latest event underscores the need for improved surveillance and response measures at public leisure facilities.
According to Mr. Kwesi Addae, a security analyst based in Tema, “Even high-end establishments are not immune to conflict or violence. The police response and follow-up will determine whether this becomes an isolated case or a worrying trend.”

Authorities have since cordoned off the area where the shooting occurred as part of their forensic assessment. Preliminary findings are expected to be reviewed by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), which will determine whether charges should be filed in court.
Eyewitness accounts circulating on social media suggest that the shooting may have followed a disagreement among a group of patrons, although the Police Service has urged the public to avoid speculation until official findings are released.
The police statement emphasized: “We encourage the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to take its full course. Updates will be provided once verified information becomes available.”
The Sakumono shooting comes amid growing public concern about sporadic gun-related incidents in urban areas across Greater Accra. According to Ghana Police statistics, over 120 firearm-related cases were recorded in the region between January and September 2025, ranging from armed robberies to personal disputes.
While Ghana remains one of the more stable and peaceful countries in West Africa, security analysts have repeatedly called for stricter gun control enforcement and public awareness campaigns on the dangers of illegal firearm possession.
The Small Arms and Light Weapons Commission (SALW) estimates that nearly 2.3 million small arms are in circulation in Ghana, with more than half believed to be unregistered — a growing national security concern.

The Ghana Police Service has been working to rebuild public confidence through visible law enforcement and the use of technology in crime detection. The establishment of the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) and the Community Policing Initiative are part of broader efforts to improve safety across major cities.
Residents of Sakumono have called for enhanced police patrols and better lighting around recreational zones, especially during weekends when social activities peak.
One resident, Mrs. Lydia Owusu, told JoyNews that the area’s growing popularity as a leisure destination also brings security challenges: “Sakumono has changed a lot in the last few years. More people visit, which is good for business, but we also need consistent police presence to make people feel safe.”
As the investigation continues, the spotlight is on how swiftly and transparently the Ghana Police Service can handle the case. Timely updates and visible justice, analysts say, will be key to maintaining public trust.
For now, the Celebrity Golf Club remains under discreet security watch, with normal operations expected to resume once the investigation is complete.
