Fake Police Officer Arrested at ShattaFest for Impersonation

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 32-year-old man, identified as Akoto Nelson, for allegedly impersonating a police officer during the just-ended ShattaFest concert at the Black Star Square in Accra.

According to police reports, Nelson was caught wearing the uniform of a deceased officer in an attempt to gain free entry into the event grounds. The suspect, who posed as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was apprehended by security personnel stationed at the venue after his suspicious conduct drew attention.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the uniform in question belonged to a late officer who served with the Ghana Police Service. Authorities say Akoto Nelson obtained the attire unlawfully and used it to deceive event organizers and security personnel on duty.

Police sources indicated that the suspect failed to produce any form of identification when questioned and was subsequently detained for further interrogation.

“The suspect was in full police attire, including badges and name tag. Upon verification, we realized the name corresponded to a deceased officer, leading to his immediate arrest,” a police spokesperson disclosed.

The Ghana Police Service has since launched a full-scale investigation to determine how the uniform was acquired and whether others may be involved in similar acts of impersonation.

The incident has sparked public debate about security measures at major events, with many calling for stricter screening of attendees and verification of personnel on duty.

ShattaFest, one of the year’s biggest music events, attracted thousands of fans to the Black Star Square, with heightened security from both police and private guards. The event, headlined by dancehall star Shatta Wale, proceeded without major disruptions apart from the arrest incident.
