Ex-Convict Arrested in Connection with Odorkor Taxi Driver Killings

Police Arrest Second Suspect in Odorkor Taxi Driver Murders

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested a second suspect believed to be involved in the recent series of taxi driver killings around Odorkor and its environs in the Greater Accra Region.

The suspect, identified as Peter Akakpo, alias “Dompe”, is a former convict who was apprehended after weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance by the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU).

According to a police statement issued on October 17, 2025, Akakpo was arrested on October 13 at Kasoa-Domeabra, a peri-urban community straddling the Central and Greater Accra regions.

Police investigations have connected Akakpo to the murders of two taxi drivers that occurred earlier this year at Sakaman Blue Lagoon — the first on May 9 and the second on June 15, 2025.

The gruesome incidents sparked public concern over rising attacks on taxi operators in Accra’s western suburbs, including Odorkor, Dansoman, and Mallam.

Police say Akakpo’s arrest follows leads from the earlier apprehension of Vincent Gbetorglo, who was captured on June 30, 2025. The CID reports that mobile communication records linked Akakpo to both victims, confirming that his phone number appeared in contact with the deceased before their deaths.

According to the CID, Akakpo was arrested inside a room rented by Gbetorglo, suggesting close coordination between the two suspects. Law enforcement officials are currently tracing the whereabouts of the stolen vehicles belonging to the murdered taxi drivers.

Police sources familiar with the case told journalists that the suspects often posed as passengers to lure taxi drivers before attacking them, a tactic that has been observed in several robbery-related killings targeting ride-hailing and taxi operators in the capital.

The Ghana Police Service, in its official statement, assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that additional information will be made available once verified.

“The Ghana Police Service wishes to assure the public that investigations are ongoing and that further developments will be communicated in due course,” the statement said.

Police have also encouraged members of the public — particularly commercial drivers — to exercise caution when picking up passengers, especially in isolated areas, and to promptly report suspicious activity to nearby stations.

The latest arrests highlight growing safety concerns among Ghana’s commercial transport operators. The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other driver associations have previously called for increased night patrols and the installation of in-car surveillance devices to deter violent crimes targeting drivers.

According to police data, at least nine robbery-related killings involving taxi and tricycle operators have been recorded in Greater Accra and parts of the Central Region since 2024. Security experts say the surge underscores the need for enhanced intelligence operations and community-police collaboration to prevent further attacks.

Both suspects — Akakpo and Gbetorglo — remain in police custody as investigations continue. Prosecutors are expected to press formal charges of murder and robbery once forensic and digital evidence is finalised.

The arrests mark a significant step in the Police Service’s ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks preying on commercial drivers.

Observers say the case serves as a reminder of the importance of public vigilance and the need for stronger coordination between law enforcement agencies, driver unions, and digital transport platforms to ensure the safety of workers in Ghana’s transport sector.
