Fisherman Remanded for Alleged GH¢50,800 Theft from Businessman’s Vehicle

A 21-year-old fisherman, Michael Dodoo, has been remanded into police custody by the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly stealing GH¢50,800 and two mobile phones from a businessman’s vehicle in Accra Central. Dodoo, together with three accomplices, identified only as Prince, Amuguaye, and Sadiku, reportedly carried out the act in the early hours of September 20, 2025.
Dodoo pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful entry, and stealing when he appeared before the court, presided over by Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Bassit. He is expected to reappear on October 20, 2025, as investigations continue.
According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, the complainant, Seidu Mohammed, a businessman from Koforidua, parked his Opel vehicle in front of the UBA Bank, Accra Central Branch, around 4:00 a.m. that morning. Without locking the doors, he reportedly crossed the road to buy tea from a nearby vendor.

Inside the vehicle, the complainant had left a bag containing two Tecno mobile phones valued at GH¢3,500 and cash of GH¢50,800. The accused persons, who were reportedly loitering in the area, allegedly took advantage of the situation. After spotting the unattended vehicle, they conspired to open it and steal the valuables inside.
The four men managed to enter the car by opening the front door, taking both the cash and the phones before fleeing the scene.
Chief Inspector Wonder told the court that the police, acting on intelligence, launched a swift operation that led to Dodoo’s arrest. He was identified as one of the suspected individuals known for breaking into vehicles around the same location in Accra Central.
During a search on Dodoo, the police reportedly recovered two Tecno mobile phones, which the complainant later identified as his stolen property.
In his caution statement, Dodoo allegedly confessed to participating in the theft but revealed that a dispute broke out among the group while they attempted to share the stolen money. He reportedly told investigators that Amuguaye took the money, promising to divide it later among them. However, the gang split up after the altercation.

The prosecution said efforts are underway to apprehend Prince, Amuguaye, and Sadiku, who are currently on the run. The police continue to trace their whereabouts and recover the stolen cash.
Meanwhile, the case highlights growing public concern over vehicle-related thefts in Accra, particularly in commercial and banking areas. Many vehicle owners have fallen victim to similar crimes after leaving valuables in unlocked or unattended cars, a trend security experts say is driven by both opportunistic theft and organized petty crime networks.
Residents and business owners in the area have urged law enforcement to intensify patrols and deploy more surveillance around high-risk spots like bank premises and early-morning trading zones.
If found guilty, Dodoo could face a substantial prison sentence, given the amount involved and the charges of conspiracy and unlawful entry. The case serves as yet another cautionary tale for the public on the importance of securing personal belongings, even for brief moments.
