Ghana Dominates with 69 Medals at 2025 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships

Team Ghana closed out the 2025 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships with an impressive total of 69 medals after three days of competition at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra. The event, which brought together swimmers from 16 West and Central African nations, ran from October 3 to 5 and also served as an official qualifier for the 2026 World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in Beijing. This marks the second consecutive year Ghana has hosted the championships at the venue.

Ghana’s junior swimmers delivered one of the standout performances of the tournament. A 12-member squad secured 43 medals and finished second overall in the junior category. Senegal topped the junior standings with 31 medals, including 11 golds just one more than Ghana’s 10. Nigeria followed in third place with 32 medals, 10 of which were gold.

Among the individual junior competitors, Benin’s Lonnah Eliane Douillet took the title of Best Female Swimmer after capturing seven medals, including six gold. Ghana’s Lea El Haj was the second-best overall performer in that category, finishing with five medals, three of which were gold. Fellow Ghanaian Swimmer Jada Yankey claimed third with a total of 11 medals, including two golds.

In the junior boys division, Nigeria’s Aidan Dumuje-Abilli emerged as Best Male Junior Swimmer, winning eight medals, six of them gold. Senegal’s Nael Lamine Vision followed with seven medals, including four gold. Ghana’s Kal-El Ntiamoah placed third with five medals, two of which were gold.

Ghana’s senior team dominated its division, emerging as the top nation with 26 medals: 13 gold, seven silver and six bronze. Senegal finished in second place with 36 medals, including 12 gold, while Benin ranked third with eight medals.

On the senior women’s side, Senegal’s Oumy Diop earned the title of Best Female Senior Swimmer after winning 11 medals, nine of which were gold. Ghana’s Joselle Mensah secured second place with five medals, including three gold. Gabon’s Noelie Lacour came third, winning 11 medals and one gold.

In the senior men’s category, Ghana made another strong statement. Harry Stacey was named Best Male Senior Swimmer after winning six medals—five of which were gold. He was followed by Benin’s Alexis Kpade with six medals, including four gold, and Ghana’s own Abeku Jackson with five medals, four of them gold.

Ghana’s senior team included standout athletes such as Abeku Jackson, Harry Stacey, Ivan Snowden, Christian Nortey, Ebenezer Osabutey, Titus Ankrah, Joselle Mensah and Nubia Adjei. The junior squad featured Tamba Akin Boamah, Yamin Amankwah Boamah, Michael Crabbe-Mann, Kal-El Ntiamoah, Andre Nimoh, Johnson Gyarko, Kwasi Frimpong, Oduma Aba Agyei, Jada Yankey, Mercedes Abdallah, Yemen Bozuma Cornie and Lea El Haj.

The 2025 edition of the Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships not only showcased the growing strength of Ghanaian swimming but also reaffirmed the nation’s ability to host high-level international competitions. With world championship qualification on the line, the performances from both junior and senior athletes underscored Ghana’s rising stature in aquatics across the subregion.
