NDC’s Bernard Bediako Wins Akwatia By-Election in Closely Contested Poll

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has claimed victory in the Akwatia by-election, with Bernard Bediako emerging as the Member of Parliament-elect. The election, closely contested, saw strong competition from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), reflecting an active and engaged electorate.

Final Provisional Results

According to the final provisional results, Bernard Bediako of the NDC secured 18,199 votes, while the NPP candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, garnered 15,235 votes. The LPG candidate, Patrick Owusu, received 82 votes. A total of 33,819 valid votes were cast, with 303 ballots rejected. The narrow margin highlights the competitive nature of the constituency, traditionally considered a swing area.

Observers noted that the turnout and voting patterns demonstrated a continued appetite for political engagement in Akwatia, with local issues and development agendas playing a decisive role in voter preferences. The results underscore the NDC’s growing influence in the Eastern Region, despite the NPP’s historical strength in the area.

Political Implications and Reactions

Bernard Bediako’s victory has been welcomed by the NDC, who view the win as a consolidation of their political presence in key swing constituencies. Party leaders praised the electorate for participating in a peaceful election process, emphasizing the importance of local development and community engagement as central themes in the campaign.

For the NPP, the results provide an opportunity to reassess campaign strategies and constituency outreach. Analysts suggest that while the party remains a major force nationally, localized voter concerns, candidate popularity, and grassroots mobilization played critical roles in determining the outcome.

Political commentators have highlighted that by-elections such as Akwatia’s serve as an important barometer of national sentiment, often reflecting public opinion on governance, policy implementation, and party performance at both regional and national levels.
