“If They Had Any Shame, They Wouldn’t Contest” – Afenyo-Markin Blasts NDC Over Akwatia By-Election

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has lashed out at the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing their decision to participate in the Akwatia by-election as a sign of “shameless politics.”

The by-election follows the death of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Akwatia, setting the stage for a heated political showdown between Ghana’s two major parties.

NDC “Lacks Respect,” Says Afenyo-Markin

Addressing journalists in Parliament on Friday, Afenyo-Markin condemned the NDC’s decision, arguing that it showed insensitivity to the memory of the late MP.

He contrasted the situation with the NPP’s response to the Tamale Central by-election, where the party refrained from fielding a candidate out of respect after the late MP’s tragic death in a helicopter crash.

“If the NDC had any shame left, they would have stayed away from this election. But their actions prove that they only care about power, not respect for the dead or the sanctity of leadership,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

Akwatia By-Election Gains Momentum

The Electoral Commission has set a date for the by-election, and both major parties are expected to mount vigorous campaigns. The NDC insists it has every right to contest and sees the election as an opportunity to regain lost ground in the Eastern Region.

Political observers say the NDC’s participation could intensify the already tense political atmosphere, especially given Akwatia’s history as a hotly contested seat.

Political Implications

Analysts believe the by-election will serve as a litmus test for both parties ahead of the 2028 general elections. For the NPP, retaining Akwatia would reinforce its dominance in the Eastern Region, while for the NDC, a win could energize its grassroots and send a strong message to the ruling party.
