Hon. Asenso‑Boakye Urges Mahama to Prioritize Accra‑Kumasi Road Dualisation Over New Expressway

Concerns Raised Over Focus on New Road Amid Ongoing Infrastructure Needs

Hon. Kwabena Asenso‑Boakye, MP and former Chief of Staff, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to prioritize the completion of the Accra–Kumasi road dualisation before initiating new expressway projects. Asenso‑Boakye made the plea in a press briefing, describing the dualisation as “a critical infrastructure project that directly impacts daily commuters, trade, and national development.”

He highlighted that Ghanaians have endured years of delays, traffic congestion, and increased road accidents due to the incomplete expansion of the Accra–Kumasi highway. Meanwhile, government plans are reportedly shifting towards building a brand new expressway parallel to this stretch.

“We cannot neglect what is underway in pursuit of what is new,” Asenso‑Boakye emphasized. “The dualisation project must be completed to benefit our people now—before diverting resources to other road projects.”

Economic and Safety Challenges on the Accra–Kumasi Corridor

Asenso‑Boakye’s appeal comes amid growing concerns over road safety and economic delays along Ghana’s busiest intercity corridor. The Accra–Kumasi highway supports vital commercial activities and serves thousands of commuters daily. Yet, congestion and poor conditions persist, leading to frequent traffic incidents and transport inefficiencies.

Completing the dualisation would enhance traffic flow, significantly reduce travel time, and improve safety. Asenso‑Boakye warns that launching a parallel expressway before finishing the current project could strain public finances and leave existing infrastructure unfinished.

He urged the Mahama government to refocus on finalizing the dualisation, citing its strategic importance as a national artery. With limited resources, the lawmaker argued, “we should finish strong, not spread ourselves thin.”
