Akwatia By-Election: NDC Holds Primaries Today With 3 contenders vying for NDC ticket

Three Candidates Contest For NDC ticket

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is holding its parliamentary primaries today, August 4, 2025, in the Akwatia Constituency of Ghana’s Eastern Region. The internal election aims to select a parliamentary candidate to represent the party in the upcoming by-election scheduled for September 2.

The by-election became necessary following the passing of sitting MP Ernest Kumi on July 7 after a short illness.

Who’s contesting the NDC slot?

Three candidates are in the race for the NDC nomination:

  • Henry Boakye Yiadom, a former MP and the party’s 2024 parliamentary candidate.
  • Erasmus Koney Ali (popularly known as Asanka), who currently serves as both an assembly member and the presiding member in the district.
  • Lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo, a respected legal practitioner entering the race with a strong support base.

The winner of today’s primaries will face Solomon Kwame Asumadu, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) acclaimed candidate. Asumadu was officially endorsed by the NPP ahead of the by-election and is expected to put up a formidable campaign.

A critical battleground seat

The Akwatia seat has historically been a swing constituency, making this by-election particularly crucial for both major political parties. Political analysts anticipate a highly competitive race, with development promises, local leadership appeal, and national party strategy playing central roles in influencing voter turnout.
