Over ₵70,000 Lost to Mobile Data Bundle Scams – Cyber Security Authority Warns

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has revealed that Ghanaians have collectively lost over ₵70,000 to mobile data bundle scams in the first half of 2025 alone. The announcement was made as part of a growing effort to alert the public to the rising trend of digital fraud in the country’s telecommunications space.

According to the CSA, cybercriminals are exploiting the popularity of mobile data services by advertising fraudulent bundle offers via social media, SMS, and even spoofed mobile platforms. Unsuspecting users are lured into paying for heavily discounted bundles that never get delivered, resulting in financial losses and compromised personal information.

Sophisticated Scams Targeting Mobile Users

“These scams are becoming more sophisticated, mimicking legitimate promotions from trusted telecom companies,” the CSA noted. “In many cases, victims unknowingly share their mobile money PINs or approve unauthorized transactions, making it easy for fraudsters to siphon funds.”

The Authority has intensified public education campaigns across digital and traditional media, urging users to verify bundle offers directly with network providers and to avoid third-party agents or unverified platforms.

Telecommunication companies in Ghana have also been urged to bolster consumer protection measures and report suspicious activity to law enforcement. Mobile network users are advised to regularly monitor their accounts, avoid sharing personal details, and report any fraud to the CSA via its incident reporting platform.

With mobile internet access now a daily necessity for many Ghanaians, digital literacy and cybersecurity awareness have become critical tools in safeguarding financial well-being in an increasingly connected society.
