Ghana Police launch probe into viral kidnapping claim by US woman who has left country

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has opened a full-scale investigation into a viral video in which an American woman alleged that she was kidnapped and robbed by men she claimed were police officers. The woman, named Arianna Naomi Mackey, posted the video on social media, a clip that rapidly gained attention both locally and internationally.

According to a press release from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the preliminary investigation revealed that Mackey had checked out of the Accra hotel where she claimed the incident occurred and left Ghana through Kotoka International Airport on December 5, the same day she departed the country.

Investigators say their attempts to contact Mackey for further statements and verification have so far proved unsuccessful. She reportedly deleted the video from her social media, blocked investigators on WhatsApp, and declined to provide contact details of a Ghanaian friend she claimed was with her at the time of the alleged incident.

The police noted that the absence of a complainant in the country complicates efforts to verify the allegations. They appealed to the public to assist if they have credible information, including video footage, eyewitness contacts, or any data that may help track the alleged perpetrators. The GPS said it remains committed to uncovering the facts and urged anyone with valid information to come forward.

In announcing the probe, the Police Service emphasised that claims of alleged misconduct by officers, especially those involving alleged kidnapping, are taken seriously. They reiterated that investigations will follow due process, and emphasised the importance of evidence, cooperation from complainants, and adherence to lawful procedures.

The development has revived discussions on safety and security for visitors in Ghana, especially at a time when the country is promoting tourism and increased international travel during festive seasons. The alleged victim had reportedly travelled as part of Christmas-season holiday visits, and the incident has stirred concerns over perceived threats to foreign visitors. Civil society organisations and tourism stakeholders are closely monitoring the case, calling for transparency, prompt investigation, and accountability. For now, the outcome remains uncertain. With the complainant abroad and unavailable for follow-up, the success of the investigation hinges on the availability of independent evidence and public cooperation. The Police Service says it remains committed to uncovering what really happened, whether the claims are proved or not.
