DNA Results of Military Helicopter Crash Victims Received from South Africa

Health Minister Receives DNA Results

Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has officially confirmed the receipt of DNA results for all eight victims of the recent military helicopter crash — a national tragedy that has shaken the country to its core.

Speaking to the press, the Minister revealed that the first set of forensic reports, specifically for Murtala Mohammed and Muniru Limuna, arrived electronically on August 9, 2025. The results for the remaining six victims were delivered today, marking a critical step in the identification process.

According to Mr. Akandoh, the DNA analysis was carried out in South Africa due to the severity of the crash and the condition of the remains, which made visual identification impossible. He noted that the Ghana government acted swiftly to ensure the families of the victims could receive closure as soon as possible.

Former President John Dramani Mahama also confirmed the update, emphasizing the emotional significance of the forensic results for the grieving families. He acknowledged the professional efforts of the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ministry of Health, and South African forensic experts in expediting the process.

“This is an incredibly painful moment for the nation, but the delivery of these results is an important step towards honouring the memory of our fallen brothers,” Mahama said.

The helicopter crash, which occurred in early August, claimed the lives of eight people, including high-ranking military officers and two government ministers. The victims were described as distinguished public servants and patriots who had dedicated their lives to national service.

National security sources say investigations into the cause of the crash are still ongoing, with technical and aviation experts working alongside military investigators to determine what went wrong.

The government has announced plans for a state funeral, with dates to be confirmed soon. The families of the victims are expected to meet with the authorities in the coming days to discuss burial arrangements and memorial services.

This tragic event has prompted widespread tributes from citizens, politicians, and celebrities. Award-winning dancehall artiste Stonebwoy earlier described the late Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Limuna as father figures, calling their passing “a sad moment for Ghana.”
