Bawumia praises Star Oil Ghana for new Ghana card fuel credit scheme

Former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has commended Star Oil Ghana for rolling out an innovative fuel credit scheme that allows customers to purchase fuel using the national Ghana card, offering flexibility and convenience in a cash-dependent fuel retail market.

The scheme enables motorists and businesses to fill fuel on credit and pay later, using secure digital identification tied to the Ghana card. According to Star Oil, the initiative aims to reduce reliance on cash, increase transparency in transactions and support financial inclusion.

Speaking at the launch event, Bawumia praised the company’s innovation, highlighting how modern payment solutions can help Ghana transition toward a more digitised economy. He encouraged other private sector firms to adopt similar innovations that align with digital infrastructure and convenience for citizens.

The fuel credit product is expected to benefit consumers who face liquidity challenges or prefer cashless transactions. It may also help small businesses and commercial transport operators manage cash flow more effectively by delaying payment until revenue is available.

Stakeholders say the initiative could reduce risks associated with cash handling, such as theft or fraudulent transactions. It could also strengthen traceability in fuel distribution, improve efficiency in operations and promote greater accountability across retail petroleum outlets.

As Ghana moves toward economic modernisation, such innovations offer glimpses of how technology, policy and private enterprise can come together to deliver services that respond to public needs and financial realities.
